Modernist family retreat In Rio

Brief

A young Brazilian couple with twin children reached out to our studio during the pandemic to redesign their 3,445 sqft apartment in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Although I was based in Miami, the full interior design project was developed remotely, with execution handled by our Rio-based team. This family sought to transform their new home into a modern, welcoming, and functional space tailored to their routine, style, and growing children.

Concept

The design was inspired by modernist principles from Brasília—clean lines, concrete finishes, curated pieces, and fluid spaces. To reflect the couple’s personalities, we added warmth through tactile materials, art, and color accents. The wife requested a soft, serene palette, while the husband, a music producer, desired a touch of boldness and a “rock” energy in the social areas.

Layout & Design Solutions

No structural changes were made to the layout, which already offered great integration. The highlight was the complete interior renovation and styling:

• Living & Dining Room: A mix of neutral tones and textures balanced with custom millwork and design pieces like the Jader Almeida chairs and a sculptural pendant. The space was styled to be both elegant and cozy, perfect for hosting friends.
• Kitchen: Deep navy cabinetry and sleek surfaces create contrast and depth. The integration with the dining area adds functionality and flow.
• Master Suite: Soft tones and natural textures define this relaxing space, featuring a wood bench by Sergio Rodrigues and photography by Ary Kaye.
• Children’s Bedroom: A playful, colorful design with custom carpentry and wall paint that brings personality and warmth. The layout supports independence while maintaining a sense of comfort.
• Styling & Decor: All rooms were styled with Brazilian furniture and curated decor for a cohesive identity. The home blends timeless elegance with a relaxed, contemporary spirit.

Challenges

The entire project was completed during the height of the pandemic. Coordinating remotely from Miami required creating a structured WhatsApp group with the family and on-site team, conducting FaceTime walkthroughs, and using 3D renderings for approvals. The timeline was ambitious—30 days for design and 30 for execution—but thanks to our well-synced team, every detail was delivered as envisioned.
